Devils Take Home Easy Win on The Road, Advancing To 5-0
The Swain County Maroon Devils blow past the Madison Patriots to continue their undefeated season with a score of 35-16.
While Swain Quarterback Reese Winchester sat out due to an ankle sprain, the Devils rushing game didn’t slow down one bit as Running Back Joshua Collins broke out with 5 total touchdowns. Madison starts off the game aggressive, going for a 4th and long conversion but ends up falling short, meanwhile Swain wastes no time scoring with two rushing plays of 23 and 46 yards by Collins to get ahead early 7-0. The Patriots bounced back by putting together a couple of rushes by Levi and Max Shelton to get into field goal range, making the score 7-3.
As the Patriots defense causes Swain QB Andruw Cody to fumble and lose possession, Madison gets the ball at midfield and soon attempts a 50 yard field goal, only to come up short. Both defenses look to stay strong as Madison comes down with an interception only to have Swain force and recover a fumble the following drive. The Devils capitalize off of the fumble recovery with a toss to Collins who throws a pass to a wide open Corey Stilwell for a 74 yard touchdown pass to add to Swain’s lead, 14-3. The Devils then got the ball with 5 seconds left until halftime and decided to go back to the well, as Collins tossed another halfback pass for a TD, this time a 45 yard bomb to Keyanthae Graham, who comes down with the catch over 2 defenders. Swain extends their lead 21-3 going into halftime.
Receiving the ball coming out the half, the Devils prove why their running game is the best in the SMC as Collins breaks out with another rushing touchdown of 44 yards, adding once again to the scoreboard 28-3. As the Devils face many penalties, the Patriots are able to march downfield and rush into the endzone with Levi Shelton to cut down the lead, 28-10. With help from the O-line, Swain’s Joshua Collins is able to add to his night with a 75 yard rush to get the Devils in the endzone once again, leading 35-10.
The Madison Patriots cannot bounce back and end up having to punt once again, however a great punt gets the ball on the 1 yard line for Swain. Another fumble by Cody gives the Patriots the ball on the 5 yard line and they waste no time punching in another rushing touchdown by Levi Shelton, as Madison still trails 35-16. As neither team can seem to get any offense going, time expires and Swain takes home the win on the road to advance to 5-0 on the season and become the lone undefeated team left in the SMC.
Look Ahead: Swain County will face off against their first conference game this season against Andrews at home, looking to extend their undefeated season. The Madison Patriots will have Rosman travel to them as they stay at home.
